India's Reservations

Reservations

The dearth of seats in Institutions of Excellence, is causing a peculiar situation in which

Ø Our young bright citizens full of potential, have to fight each other to grab the limited opportunities and

Ø Our rulers are in a position to dole out seats for admissions to a section of people in the name of caste or creed while denying the same to other deserving youth with narrow object of gaining votes.

It is really unfortunate that after several decades of independence, we still have not invested enough resources for providing our masses with right opportunities for quality education.

In Mahabharatha, when Drona was teaching heirs of Pandava and Gaurava dynasty, Ekalaiva, son of a hunter could hear, practice, learn and achieve excellence. There are as many princes among beneficiaries of reservation as there are poor bright youngsters who are not entitled to a reserved seat. Forget about reservation, there are bright young students(whatever the category) who narrowly miss an admission because of the intense competition to grab the limited seats.

I believe, the available Institutions of Excellence can propagate high quality education without having to establish too many campuses by utilizing the modern Information Technology. The Institutions do not have to dilute on quality but maintain rigorous standards for students who pass out. Will not our youth(reserved or unreserved) learn like Ekalaiva, if quality education is made to reach every nook and corner of the country by "Distance Education" with facilities for labs or seminars periodically at a major centre? Will the academicians find an answer?
